Pete Duel! Loss & Laughter! Triumph & Tragedy: An Exclusive conversation with Belinda Montgomery
R.I.P. Pete Duel! R.I.P. L.Q. Jones! R.I.P. Andrew Prine! R.I.P. Barry Brown! Join us as the ageless and effervescent actress Belinda Montgomery reflects on her extensive and fulfilling career. In a heartfelt conversation with producer Rob Word, Belinda reminisces about these dearly departed actors and more, captivating fans and film buffs at The Autry on November 20, 2018. Hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Belinda's foray into performing began when her actor father, Cecil Montgomery, cast her in a unique role on his radio series, thanks to her husky voice. This early experience paved the way for her blossoming career. Discovered by a Universal Studios talent scout, Belinda secured a contract with Universal, marking the start of her diverse journey in episodic series, TV movies, and pilots. Although familiar with westerns from her time in Canada, it was L.Q. Jones who taught her to ride in the western style on the set of "The Virginian." Her western saga continued with "Alias Smith and Jones," notably working on Pete Duel’s final episode. The news of his subsequent suicide, just hours after they had lunch together, left her as stunned as the rest of the world. Duel's video biography is included in our A WORD ON WESTERNS' episode, 12 WESTERN STARS WHO DIED TOO SOON. Here's the link: • R.I.P. 12 HOLLYWOOD STARS WHO DIED TOO SOO... Belinda's versatility shone in other westerns, including "How the West Was Won" (1979) alongside Bruce Boxleitner and TV movies like "Lock, Stock, and Barrel" (1971) with Tim Matheson, and "The Bravos" (1972) directed by Ted Post, featuring talents such as George Peppard, L.Q. Jones, Pernell Roberts, Bo Svenson, and Barry Brown — whose tragic suicide shocked everyone. Many may recognize Belinda as Doogie Howser's mother, Sonny Crockett's wife on "Miami Vice," or Dr. Merrill on "Man from Atlantis." With over 100 credits, she remains active, even playing a role in TRON: LEGACY (2010).
