SPECIAL EMCH Hydraulic Lift with Counterweight in Berne, Switzerland
Timestamps: 0:00 intro 0:21 normal ride 2:40 motor room 4:55 car top / lift shaft This lift is situated in a shopping center with apartments on top in Berne. It serves the two parking decks, the shopping floor, a direct exit leading outside and a locked off floor that leads to the apartments. This lift has a rather special drive system: It is roped hydraulic combined with a counterweight. The hydraulic cylinder contracts to pull the lift car up and extends on decent. The lift car is constructed like a normal underslung 2:1 traction lift car, center-supported. The counterweight is a lot lighter than it would normally be as it does not balance the lift fully. An empty lift car still is heavier and will decend upon release of the valve. Due to the counterweight side being roped 4:1 it only travels half the distance of the lift car and therefore is placed above the cylinder in the shaft. This elaborate mechanical construction reduces the needed power of the hydraulic drive and results in a lift that with a speed of 1m/s is very fast for a hydraulic. It also travels a quite large distance of 17 meters. The lift feels much slower than it actually is in the car because of the large floor distances.
