Gouache Blending on Black Paper: Replicating Eyvind Earle and His Amazing, Stylized Trees!
IT'S CALLED "ASMR" (if you make it to the 5:30 mark, you'll get the reference! lol) Ok, so Eyvind Earle called this dramatic piece, Early Spring, and last week when I painted it, the sun was shining and crocuses were popping up everywhere. Then yesterday, when I did my editing, the wind was blowing and tree branches were flying through the air, and today when I did my voice over, the snow was falling, and now it's hailing... ahhhh early spring, you feisty bitch. I love this time of year, it's so full of potential energy! The buds are about to burst forth their electric green, creating the most intense contrast with the dark, bare branches. I can see why Eyvind created so many spring themed pieces. This one in particular is a serigraph print, and although I couldn't find a date, I'm guessing it was made in the late 1980s, when Eyvind was living in Carmel, California. The rolling hills catching the light, the dark shadows, and that vibrant, early spring green give it away. It's a gorgeous location that I would love to visit again so I can paint my heart out. I think this is a good time to mention that I've started a digital plein air instagram account. I try to do one quick study everyday. It helps me so much with my gouache painting practice. Digital Plein Air Instagram: @pleinairbyeringreen Also, I'll be teaching Zoom classes this summer where I'll share my process of going from digital to traditional media and how the two help one another, along with guiding students through some gouache replicas, original landscape paintings, and more! If you're interested, let me know in the comments. And tell me if there is anything in particular you'd like to learn if you were to take my class! Registration will open up April 1st and I am SUPER EXCITED! It is going to be a GOOOOOD TIME!
