Many tenant businesses, including clothing stores and restaurants, have already closed their doors, creating an atmosphere of eerie silence. If major shareholder MBK Partners and largest creditor Meritz Financial Group fail to reach an agreement on raising 200 billion won by the upcoming 17th, Homeplus's bankruptcy will become a reality. Concerns are rising that a chain reaction of damage is inevitable, as Homeplus's tenants and small and medium-sized partner companies will be affected one after another if the company goes bankrupt. It is also expected to act as a negative factor for the self-employed economy. Last year, 975,000 businesses closed down, nearing the 1 million mark. In particular, the number of businesses that eventually shut down after holding out for more than five years reached approximately 317,000, marking the highest level since 2005, when statistics became available.
