Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977, led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Mark Knopfler. The original lineup consisted of Mark Knopfler, his younger brother David Knopfler (rhythm guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums). Over the years, key members also included Alan Clark (keyboards), Hal Lindes (guitar), Guy Fletcher (keyboards), and Terry Williams (drums). Dire Straits achieved worldwide success with their 1978 debut single “Sultans of Swing” which became an international hit, just like "Water of Love". Their most commercially successful album, “Brothers in Arms” (1985), sold over 30 million copies globally and featured iconic singles such as “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life” and “So Far Away”. The album was a landmark in the CD era and topped charts in multiple countries, including the UK and the US. Other successful albums include “Making Movies” (1980) and “Love Over Gold” (1982). The band won four Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Performance, and received a Brit Award for Best British Group. In 2018, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
