Biomechanics & Pathomechanics of Knee Extensors | Quadriceps Uncovered
Detailed lecture on Biomechanics and Pathomechanics of Knee Complex EXTENSORS. The chief EXTENSORS of knee are 4 in number and they are VASTUS LATERALIS,VASTUS MEDIALIS, VASTUS INTERMEDIUS& RECTUS FEMORIS often known as QUADRICEPS MUSCLE.Each of this muscles have an individual role in KNEE EXTENSION and their efficiency, activation peak, etc varies from one another. The most important aspect of quadriceps is that the line of action of each muscle varies from one another, the line of action or pull of Vastus lateralis is about 35 degree lateral and line of action of Vastus medialis is 40 degree medially. The Vastus intermedius has line which is exactly in parallel with long axis of femur making it purest Knee Extensor. Further discussion progress on Patellar role in quadriceps muscle function, how patella increases the moment arm and line of pull of quadriceps and later on the adverse effect of increasing moment arm that is straining of ACL is discussed. Discussion also evaluate role of quadriceps in posture and gait and lastly difference in quadriceps activation in weight bearing and non weight bearing situations. Biomechanics and Pathomechanics of each of them are discussed in detail focusing on their role, effect of tightness, effect of weakness etc on knee complex.
