In this video, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned from nearly two years of keeping guppies—from choosing the right guppy tank setup, to maintaining healthy guppy water parameters, to feeding and even guppy breeding tips. Guppies are one of the most popular freshwater fish in the hobby for good reason: they’re beautiful, active, and come in an incredible range of colors and tail types. But despite their reputation as beginner-friendly fish, they do have specific care needs—and they breed a lot. So whether you're setting up a male-only tank or starting a breeding colony, this video will walk you through exactly what to expect. I cover tank size recommendations for both male and female guppies, with insights into how stocking density changes depending on whether you’re keeping males only or planning to breed. You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at my personal tanks, including my current 25-liter setup and a larger 29-gallon breeding project in the works. We dive into all the essentials of guppy tank setup, including the importance of filtration, heating, and lighting. I talk through the gear I use—like hang-on-back filters, sponge filters, the Hygger and Fluval heater models, and the Seaoura SR616 light for planted tanks. I also touch on the pros and cons of using aquasoil versus inert substrates and how I use Seiryu Stone to maintain ideal hardness and pH. Guppy water parameters are another key focus. I explain what’s worked for me with soft tap water and how I maintain stable conditions using crushed coral, Seiryu Stone, and reliable heaters to keep things in the ideal range for these colorful livebearers. When it comes to guppy feeding, these little fish aren’t picky. I alternate between Fluval Bug Bites and Hikari Micro Pellets, supplemented with frozen treats like bloodworms and daphnia. Guppies are omnivores and natural grazers, so you’ll often see them picking at algae or food meant for tank mates like shrimp. Speaking of tank mates, I share my firsthand experience keeping guppies with Endlers, honey gourami, cherry shrimp, Amano shrimp, and snails. But honestly, my favorite tank mate for guppies… is more guppies! They’re active, social fish that do best in groups, especially in male-only setups where they can establish a peaceful hierarchy if stocked correctly. Of course, we also get into the realities of guppy breeding—from how to sex your guppies to fry care and managing population growth. I explain why I waited nearly two years to start breeding and share practical tips for keeping things under control, including checking with local fish stores before diving in.
