Strengthening Structures with Fiber Reinforced Polymers - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erkan AKPINAR Seminar Topic: The use of fiber reinforced polymer composites (LP, FRP) in structures generally came into being in the late 1990s and has become popular in the last 20 years. The properties they offer, such as high strength, low weight, and resistance to environmental conditions (especially carbon fiber - CFRP), have maintained interest in fiber reinforced polymers for 30 years, and thanks to their accelerating popularity, they are still seen as a miraculous strengthening material today. However, the miraculous effect promised by LPs, which has been experimentally proven many times and in different ways, has application prerequisites and application limits/constraints. The seminar aims to share fundamental and critical information regarding the use of this miraculous material in strengthening, where incorrect design and application can be fatal. Details of fiber reinforced polymer composite materials, application conditions/constraints/requirements, and application areas will be discussed, along with common application errors that are believed to be correct after 30 years.
