August of Hippo (354-430) founded the first monastery on the African continent but never founded the order named after him. It took until the Middle Ages before his writings were spread over Western Europe. From then on his rules were followed by a great number of new foundations. The foundation of the monastery of Marienhage in Eindhoven goes back to 1419 when a number of civilians decided to live together following the rule of St.August.
