Today I'm going to introduce you to a work called The Greek Zorba. This work, published in 1946, is a very unique novel that feels like it has become a must-read book for modern people. Because Zorba, the protagonist of this painting, is completely opposite of the weak modern man who lives a stereotyped life trapped in all kinds of social norms and boring daily life, and is far from any traditional morality or values, as if he were a symbol of a free human type. It was also made into a film starring Anthony Quinn in 1964, and "The Dance of Jorba" by Mikis Theodorakis became a popular song. Nikos Kazantzakis, who wrote "Greek Zorba," was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature and was narrowly eliminated, and Albert Camus, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957, said, "Kazantzakis should have won the Nobel Prize a hundred times more than I did." Perhaps the most impressive comment by writers about this writer is Colin Wilson's next remark. "It is a tragedy that Kazantzakis is Greek. Had his name been Kazantzowski and written in Russian, he would have been able to compete with Tolstoy and Dostoevsky." But Colin Wilson's assessment may only be about half true. If Kazantzakis wasn't Greek, the Greek Zorba wouldn't even have been born. The Greek Zorba was so Greek, and the author who recreated such a real person in the novel was also a "Greek, so Greek." At this point, we need to take a closer look at what the expression "Greek-like" really means. When you think of Greece, what image comes to mind first? Homer, who wrote "Ilias" and "Odusseia," which are praised as eternal and immortal epic poems left by mankind? Trojan War? Socrates or Plato who said "Know Yourself"? Aristotle? Ancient Greek tragic poets who wrote many tragedies, including King Oedipus? Sparta's 300 warriors who showed incredible fighting spirit in three Persian wars? Or the Battle of Salamis? Battle of Marathon? Ancient Greek temple where the Olympic torch lighting ceremony is held every four years? It's amazing that all of these things come from ancient Greece, just looking at the various figures and events that I've just roughly mentioned in the Zumagan Mountains. It was no wonder that Nietzsche, a philosopher who had an extraordinary attachment and enthusiasm for exploration of ancient Greece, left the following words about Greece in his work called The Birth of Tragedy. Until we convincingly explained that all art depended on the Greeks internally, from Homer to Socrates, what the Greeks meant to us would have been exactly what Socrates meant to the Greeks. Almost every era and every stage of culture has had a deep sense of discontent and at least once struggled to escape from the Greeks. Because when you stand before the Greeks, everything you've accomplished, everything that seems completely original on the outside, everything that you can truly admire, suddenly loses its color and life, and it shrivels into a failed imitation, a painting. So people would ask who the hell they are.
