Don't miss the quiz at 4:49! Let’s explore the beauty of Arabic letters by getting to know what solar & lunar letters are. Find out which letters belong to which group in this new video lesson, then test your knowledge with the quiz at the end! Solar & Lunar letters is a weird term, so what are they? Well, any letter in the Arabic alphabet is either a solar/sun or lunar/moon letter based on whether or not the L in the definite article "الـ" (al, meaning "the") is pronounced. Knowing which letter is pronounced and which is silent is important for pronunciation of Arabic words. These names come from the fact that the word for 'the sun', al-shams, pronounced ash-shams, assimilates the lām, while the word for 'the moon', al-qamar, doesn't. For words starting with solar letters, "alhuroof asshamsiya" in Arabic, the L of "الـ" (al; the) will not be pronounced. Whereas those starting with lunar letters, "alhuroof alqamariya", will pronounce the L. Don't forget to subscribe, like and share for more videos! Arabic with Amina is your online Arabic teacher!
