Text. 1 Samuel 18:7-8 This was their song: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” This made Saul very angry. “What is this?” he said. “They credit David for ten thousands and me only for thousands. They might as well make him their king!” Because if there is one thing that makes us unbearable to others, it is when we are successful. •⁠ ⁠HE TRIES TO KILL HIM TWICE 1 Samuel 18:10-11 The next day, while David was playing the harp, God sent an evil spirit to torment Saul. Then Saul became mad inside the palace, and since he had a spear in his hand, he threw it at David, intending to pin him to the wall. But David managed to dodge it twice. • INDIRECT MURDER 1 Samuel 18:17 One day, Saul said to David, “Look, I will give you my daughter Merab as a wife. The only thing I ask of you is that you be courageous and, in the name of God, go out at the head of the army in battle.” In reality, what Saul wanted was for David to be killed. That is why he thought, “Instead of me killing him, let the Philistines kill him.” • HATES HIM FOR NOTHING 1 Samuel 18:29 That is why he came to hate David and became his lifelong enemy. • HE ORDERS HIM TO BE KILLED 1 Samuel 19:1 “Saul ordered his son Jonathan and his men to kill David…” • HE TRIES TO KILL HIM AGAIN 1 Samuel 19:9-10 One day, Saul was sitting in his house, listening to David play the harp. Suddenly, an evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and since Saul had a spear in his hand, 10 he threw it at David, intending to pin him to the wall. However, David managed to dodge it in time. • A NIGHT AMBUSH 1 Samuel 19:11 Then Saul ordered some of his men to surround David's house and kill him in the morning. • HE PURSUES HIM LIKE A CRIMINAL 1 Samuel 23:14 David took refuge in strongholds in the wilderness and in the hill country of Ziph. Saul pursued him day after day, but God did not allow Saul to find him. • HE SEEKS TO FINISH HIM OFF 1 Samuel 26:2 Then Saul chose three thousand of Israel's best soldiers and went out with them to pursue David in the wilderness of Ziph. • HE ACCUSES HIM OF CONSPIRACY 1 Samuel 22:8 Is this why they have conspired against me? Yet none of you warned me when my own son made a solemn covenant with David. You don't even feel sorry for me. Imagine that! My own son is inciting David to kill me, just as he's trying to do today! • TOTAL HATRED 1 Samuel 22:17 And he ordered his guards, “Kill these priests of the Lord, for they are allies of David and conspirators with him! They knew he was fleeing from me, but they didn't tell me!” Saul used power to persecute – David uses it to serve 1. HELPING THEM 1 Samuel 16:23 And whenever the tormenting spirit from God afflicted Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would leave him. The unbearable reveal what they are…but they also reveal what we are. 1 Samuel 18:5 David went out wherever Saul sent him, and he acted wisely. Saul put him in charge of the fighting men, and he was well-liked by all the people and by Saul’s servants. My love doesn’t depend on how unbearable the other person is, but on the character Christ has placed in me. 2. TOLERATE THEM 1 Samuel 18:11 Saul hurled his spear, saying, “I’ll pin David to the wall!” But David evaded him twice. When they can’t tolerate your success, tolerate their insecurities. 1 Samuel 23:14 David took refuge in strongholds in the wilderness and in the hill country of Ziph. Saul pursued him day after day, but God did not allow Saul to find him. There are attacks that don't deserve a response, but rather distance. 3. LOVE THEM 1 Samuel 24:8 Then David got up and went out of the cave and called after Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed his face to the ground and paid homage. 1 Samuel 26:9 “No!” said David. “Don’t kill him. For who will be innocent after attacking the Lord’s anointed?” Love is capable of paying with forgiveness when the situation calls for revenge. 1 Samuel 26:22 “Here is his spear, O king,” said David. “Let one of your young men go and get it.” 2 Samuel 1:11-12 When David and his men heard the news, they tore their clothes in grief. They mourned, wept, and fasted all day for Saul and his son Jonathan. David wept for the one who had made his life miserable…for love is incomprehensible. CONCLUSION: There are unbearable people, but perhaps you and I are unbearable to others. Therefore, there is no other way than to show the love of Jesus to every unbearable person who, like us, needs a little grace.
