They Crowned This Mountain Driveway WRONG (Here's My Fix)

This mountain gravel driveway in Gainesboro, Tennessee had a serious water problem — and the crown was the cause. Whoever graded it last tried to crown the road and split the runoff into a ditch, but the pitch never got high enough to actually reach it. So the water cupped in the middle, got trapped, and ran straight down the hill where nobody wanted it. Instead of fighting that failed crown, we did the opposite. We pitched the entire road one direction so every bit of runoff sheds off into the grass and gets absorbed, instead of cutting channels into the gravel. The existing ditch up top still grabs the overflow, and the lower ditches catch anything that makes it down the grade. We brought in crusher run instead of a finish layer because it was packing so hard — we were getting 100 to 120 on the Hamm roller, way harder than you normally need for gravel — so we just graded it out and let it lock in. Down in the worst corner we built the whole thing up with a 15-inch cover to kill the cupping and flatten the connection back into the driveway, so folks can still pull right up and get normal access.
