The Freshest Gin Cocktail—and Its Perfect Alcohol-Free Twin

The Basil Smash is proof that some of the best cocktails come from the simplest ingredients. Fresh, vibrant, and packed with garden-fresh flavor, this modern classic has earned its place as one of the most refreshing gin cocktails ever created. Today, I’m making two versions of the Basil Smash: the classic cocktail featuring Hendrick’s Neptunia and a creative non-alcoholic riff that delivers all the flavor and complexity without the alcohol. Originally created by bartender Jörg Meyer at the legendary Le Lion in 2008, the Basil Smash quickly became a modern classic thanks to its bold green color, fresh herbaceous character, and perfect balance of citrus and gin botanicals. For the classic version, Hendrick’s Neptunia brings bright citrus, juniper, and subtle coastal notes that pair beautifully with fresh basil and lemon juice. But the real surprise may be the alcohol-free version. Using fresh basil, lime juice, non-alcoholic gin, and sparkling Topo Chico, this riff recreates the refreshing character of the original while a homemade habanero syrup provides the warmth and lingering sensation often missing from zero-proof cocktails. The result is a complex, refreshing drink that stands on its own rather than feeling like a compromise.
