The First Fatal Frame 2 Remake

I can't believe Fatal Frame 2 beat the original Resident Evil to the punch. I'm still waiting for Capcom to announce a second Resident Evil remake. I haven't played the Wii remake of Fatal Frame 2 until now. With the 2026 remake on the horizon, what better time to check it out? In many ways, this remake can feel like an extended cut, or even a mod. Looks-wise, it's not too different than the original. Both art direction and graphic fidelity. But it shifts to an over the shoulder perspective. It's a great example of how much a game can lose in the switch. It's not bad, but it is a noticeable step down for atmosphere. There are tweaks to fit the Wii controls. Even then, they feel under-cooked and not making the most of them. The game uses mechanics introduced in the fourth entry of the series. Mechanics that can muck with the game's momentum. On the narrative and major story beats? For a good chunk of the game, the Fatal Frame 2 remake is in-line with the original. Small tweaks here and there. But nothing major. It's in the game's end stretch where things change. There's some expansions on the story. Some interesting additions, others redundant. But it has a better ending system, along with two new endings. One that's one of the most unsettling endings I've come across. By no means is the remake an essential play. The original is still the better game. But it is a fascinating one. There are elements here that I hope make their way into the 2026 remake.
