FIRST READING Acts 22:30; 23:6-11 “It is necessary that you also testify in Rome.” A reading from the Acts of the Apostles In those days, wanting to obtain certain information about the accusations of the Jews against Paul, he ordered that his chains be removed and that the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin be assembled. He then had Paul brought down to appear before them. Paul, knowing that the Council was composed of the party of the Sadducees and the party of the Pharisees, exclaimed in the midst of the Sanhedrin: “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees, and it is because of our hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am being judged.” These words sparked a conflict between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the assembly was divided. Indeed, the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angels, nor spirits, while the Pharisees affirm both. A great outcry arose, and some scribes of the party of the Pharisees rose and began to protest vehemently, saying: “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel spoke to him?” The argument escalated into violence, to such an extent that the tribune, fearing that they would tear Paul to pieces, ordered the soldiers to go down to take him from among them and bring him back to the fortress. The following night, the Lord appeared to Paul and said: “Take courage! Just as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, you must also testify in Rome.” The word of the Lord.
