On April 9, 2002, Gerhard Schröder and Vladimir Putin, along with host Alfred Biolek, participated in the talk show "Boulevard Bio" at the National Theater in Weimar. Topics included the relationship between the EU and NATO and Russia, democracy in Russia, and nuclear weapons. Schröder and Putin appeared friendly during the discussion and both expressed a desire to strengthen relations between Germany and Russia. Twenty years later, these statements stand in stark contrast to the current actions of the Putin regime in its war of aggression against Ukraine. During the talk show, Putin claimed that dictators and despots were leading Russia into a terrible future and spoke out in favor of democracy.
