Overview of the WJ V Cognitive Battery

The WJ authors have never been constrained by “the inertia of tradition” (J. Horn)—which continues with the iPad normed digital WJ V. The CHC-based WJ V COG is a major revision that keeps 2/3 of the WJ IV COG tests. Decisions about tests to drop or revise, and new tests to add, were based on the most recent (2018) CHC model, including the addition of new broad Gl and Gr tests and clusters. The composition of all but one (Gwm) of the eight broad CHC clusters changed. The Ga tests are now in the new Virtual Test Library (VTL); which can be used with either the COG or ACH batteries to add in depth measurement of Gs/Gr (RAN tests), Gwm, and Ga abilities. The improved GIA cluster consists of 8 tests, half which differ from the WJ IV GIA. This presentation provides an overview of the rationale (i.e., theoretical, empirical, user feedback) for all changes. Validity evidence for the WJ V COG (e.g., correlations with the Wechsler’s, KABC-II NU, RIAS2; factor analysis) will be reviewed, as well as preliminary research on the relations between the WJ V COG/VTL tests/broad CHC clusters and reading and math achievement.
