The hidden logic behind life's pathways | EoB Ch00

As the name suggests, this is heavily inspired by 3Blue1Brown’s Essence of series. It’s all about getting to the heart of the subject of biochemistry, which I will be uploading every week, starting late-September and ending around December. Biochemistry is super broad. While at the same time, decorated by small, yet significant details–and every single one of them matters. That’s one reason it’s all often cynically presented as things to turn into flash cards to cram one night before your exam. Lots of chemical names, structures, pathways, counterintuitive exceptions, and math formulae that you just take for granted. With these feelings in mind, here’s the vision I have in mind for this series: That vision is: when you see something like this (glycolysis image), you don’t feel intimidated. Instead, you feel that every step not only makes sense, but makes you come to appreciate the engineering principles life employs and feel empowered to take from that and apply them to your own field of study. Not only will this make memorization feel far less cynical, it provides a framework for them to live in, strengthening them. Memorization that will, in turn, form the basis for your intuitions and problem solving realizations later on. You’ll stop feeling like a student drowning in facts… and start feeling like a scientist uncovering blueprints.
