He graduated from the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England, in 1980. He later served in the British armed forces and then the Jordanian armed forces. In 1993, he was appointed deputy commander of the country's elite Special Forces. A year later, he became the Special Forces Commander and continued this duty until he ascended to the throne.
