A historian, magistrate, and diplomat who served six dynasties, Ibn Khaldun retired in 1375 to an Algerian fortress to write Al-Muqaddima. This work identifies five laws of the imperial cycle: asabiyya as the driving force of history, the inevitable sequence of foundation-expansion-zenith-decline-collapse, excessive taxation that destroys prosperity, the parasitic state that stifles production, and luxury that always precedes collapse. In January 2026, the United States exhibited symptoms of Phase Four: $38 trillion in debt, 17 percent institutional trust, a fertility rate of 1.6 percent, and 80 percent perceiving a national division. These human constants, which Ibn Khaldun observed in the Roman Empire, the Abbasid Caliphate, and the Ottoman Empire, are manifesting themselves today with disturbing precision in the American empire.
