The story takes place in a dystopian England dominated by a fascist regime, where the enigmatic V, wearing the Guy Fawkes mask, leads an insurgency marked by anarchist ideals and the liberation of the individual from totalitarianism. In 2005, the work was adapted into a film directed by James McTeigue and produced by the Wachowskis of Matrix fame, which reinterpreted some political aspects, softening the anarchism in favor of a more general rebellion against tyranny. The Guy Fawkes mask, consolidated by the comic book and popularized by the film, has become a global cultural icon, adopted by diverse movements, protests against banks and corporations, and even demonstrations from opposing political spectrums, revealing its symbolic plasticity. While the narrative emphasizes fascism as a structure of hierarchical, vigilant, and totalizing oppression, anarchism emerges as a liberating force, not only from state power but also from psychological and social constraints—a central tension that ensures the work's relevance and critical complexity. In this video, I discuss V FOR VENDETTA, analyze the comic book, discuss the film, the cultural impact of the Guy Fawkes mask on contemporary politics, and Alan Moore's worldview on anarchism and fascism.
