(© Vladimir Kot) * * The Moscow Planetarium is one of the largest planetariums in the world and the oldest in Russia. It is located in Moscow near the new Moscow Zoo, not far from the Garden Ring. At the time of its opening, the Moscow Planetarium was the only one in the country, and the thirteenth in the world and Europe. The main focus of the Moscow Planetarium is the popularization of natural science. Construction of the planetarium began on the autumnal equinox, September 23, 1928. The planetarium's grand opening took place on November 5, 1929. That year, Vladimir Mayakovsky wrote a poem about the planetarium, ending with the lines: "...Every proletarian should look at the planetarium." The planetarium's halls are located on four levels: On the lower, underground level are the Small Star Hall (designed to show children a miniature version of the starry sky), a 4D cinema, and the interactive Lunarium Museum (with exhibits on astronomy and physics). On the second level are the large and small observatories, the Sky Park astronomical site with a collection of open-air astronomical instruments, and the Urania Museum, which displays historic Zeiss equipment and a collection of meteorites. Directly beneath the planetarium's dome on the upper level is the Large Star Hall, whose projector allows you to see the movement of over 9,000 celestial bodies across the sky. The planetarium is open from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM every day of the week except Tuesday.
