Around 250 people from Manipur were airlifted in the first phase under “Operation Wings of Dawn” on April 23 as a part of a larger plan to move thousands more in the coming years. The Bnei Menashe, settled in Manipur and Mizoram, trace their roots to the ancient tribe of Menashe and have long sought to return to Israel for religious and cultural reasons. The community, which claims descent from one of the biblical “lost tribes” of Israel, sees the move as a return to its ancestral homeland.
