Tanigawa Onsen “Bettei Senjuan” in Gunma Founded in 1997. It was after the burst of the bubble economy and the year Yamaichi Securities went bankrupt. No other new inns opened in Japan that year. The inn was built on a 30,000 tsubo (about 100,000m2) site, with only 18 guest rooms in a 1,000 tsubo (about 3,300m2) building. The founder, Mr. Kubo, abandoned the cost-oriented approach that had been the norm in the ryokan business up to that time, and built the inn with the belief that it would be a first-class inn that cherishes its guests and offers them the utmost in luxury. This belief has not wavered in the management of the ryokan, and can still be felt throughout the building and grounds. You may be wondering what kind of places you can sense this belief, right?
