CLIMATE-SMART AGRICULTURE: THE FUTURE OF FOOD SECURITY IN SOUTHEAST NIGERIA
Agriculture is still the predominant means of livelihood in Southeast Nigeria, but farmers are now increasingly experiencing the effects of climate change. Unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged dry spells, rising temperatures, declining soil fertility and land degradation are diminishing crop yields, threatening rural incomes and raising food prices across the country. In this edition of Eastern Business, we look at why traditional farming methods may no longer be enough to meet Nigeria’s growing food demands and how climate-smart agriculture is emerging as a practical solution to strengthen food security, improve productivity and build resilience against climate change. Professor Martin Anikwe, a world-renowned soil physicist, former Enugu State Commissioner for Agriculture and the current Director of International Linkages and Collaborations at Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), is part of the conversation. Drawing on decades of research and policy experience, he explains how science, technology, sustainable land management and data-driven farming practices can assist in transforming agriculture in the Southeast and across Nigeria. The conversation covers the effect of climate change on food production, the necessity of healthy soils, current farming practices, government policies, the role of youth in agriculture, and the investments required to create a resilient agricultural sector that can feed Nigeria’s growing population. If you’re a farmer, a policymaker, an agribusiness entrepreneur, a student, a researcher, or simply interested in Nigeria’s economy and food security, then this insightful discussion will provide expert perspectives on what the future of agriculture looks like in a changing climate.
