Cultural Competency vs. Cultural Humility | Praxis in Music Therapy
Pointing out the problems with cultural competency does not make anyone a bad person. However, I hope that with this explanation it can inspire clinicians to be more mindful of their biases and how that affects the way they work with their clients. It's impossible to exist in a therapeutic relationship as a "blank slate" when we have lives outside of our work and profession. Being willing to acknowledge that we're not perfect and innocent all the time is the hardest but most important part of this work.
