Exploring the Abandoned Hotel Wyoming (Mullens, West Virginia)
In this video, we explore the long abandoned Hotel Wyoming in Mullens, West Virginia. Once one of the most important and elegant buildings in the region. Built in 1920 during the height of the coal boom, the Wyoming Hotel stood five stories tall and served as the social and economic heart of Mullens. Designed by architect Alex B. Mahood, the hotel welcomed coal executives, railroad workers, travelers, and even notable figures passing through southern West Virginia. Its grand lobby, dining rooms, and upper floors reflected a time when Mullens was thriving as a coal and rail hub. Mullens itself was incorporated in 1912, growing rapidly as coal mining and the railroad brought jobs, families, and prosperity to Wyoming County. But as the coal industry declined and economic conditions changed, the town’s population shrank — and the hotel’s future followed the same path. The Wyoming Hotel officially closed in 1978, leaving behind a massive structure frozen in time. Today, the building stands abandoned, weathered, and open — a haunting reminder of Appalachia’s boom-and-bust history. Join us as we walk through its silent halls, explore what remains, and reflect on a place that once symbolized opportunity, now left to decay. ⚠️ This video is for historical and educational purposes only.
