An experimental physics researcher, she has focused her interest on the interface between solid-state physics, nanophotonics, quantum optics, and quantum information science. During her PhD at the University of Parma and postdoctoral positions at various institutes in the same city, she primarily studied the interaction between light and matter in materials for photonics applications. In 2012, she became a researcher at the ICFO, the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona, ​​where she directed the Solid-State Quantum Memories project in Professor Hugues de Riedmatten's group. The team she led has demonstrated fundamental experiments in the field of quantum communication. Furthermore, Margherita and her colleagues at ICFO participated, along with 12 other laboratories worldwide, in the first global quantum physics experiment, known as The BIG Bell Test.
