Baba Yaga is arguably the most famous witch in the folklore traditions of Poland, the Baltic states, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. A fascinating, fearsome, and multifaceted figure who—at least at first glance—resembles the typical witches of many other cultures, often playing the role of a bogeyman for children. Yet, she is unique in many ways. She is said to be an old, wild witch, powerful in various magical arts. Some say she is a guardian of the underworld, which is why a gate made of animal bones and human skulls surrounds her home. Many fear her, for it is said that she sometimes even devours people. However, this was not always the case. In this program, we will explore how her nature, appearance, attributes, and characteristics have developed and changed over the centuries, and where the possible origins of her figure can be found in the once pagan beliefs of the Slavic peoples.
