Hidden Tunnels, Tough Trails & Wild Camping | Jaunt to De Doorns

The De Doorns Tunnel Tour has quickly become one of our favourite Jaunts — and this trip proved exactly why. We headed deep into the rugged mountains of De Doorns for a weekend filled with history, technical 4x4 driving, and proper wild camping. One of the highlights? Driving straight through the oldest railway tunnel in Southern Africa, dating all the way back to 1876. From there, we explored more of the area’s rich history, including an old Anglo-Boer War lookout point, before making our way to the abandoned tunnel station where we set up camp for the night. With a beautiful sunset and open skies, it was the perfect way to end the day. But the real test came on the trail. A seldom-driven Level 3–4 route took us up the mountain, throwing everything at us — rocky sections, deep washouts, awkward angles, and plenty of wheel lift. With careful driving and solid spotting, we managed to get every vehicle through the route with minimal damage… even a completely stock Toyota Hilux made it to the top. After conquering the trail, we spent time exploring the farm and its old railway history before settling into camp for a well-earned evening in the mountains. Another unforgettable Jaunt in the books. Would you take your vehicle through this trail?
