East Frisia: People by the River – Historical Documentary (VHS Archive) The historical documentary "People by the River" is part of the well-known East Frisia Saga by documentary filmmaker and cultural scholar Dr. Edmund Ballhaus. The film represents a unique historical document about the now almost forgotten, arduous life along the East Frisian waterways and the Ems River. This video was digitized from an original VHS tape as part of a private archive to preserve this regional cultural heritage for posterity. ℹ️ FILM DETAILS & BACKGROUND: Title: People by the River (Part of the "East Frisia Saga") Directed and written by: Dr. Edmund Ballhaus Edmund Ballhaus Production: Society for Cultural Studies Film (GfkF) / NDR Co-Production Format: Digitized from the original VHS tape (archive copy) Language: German / Low German eyewitness accounts 📜 DOCUMENTARY CONTENT: Living by the river, especially the Ems, meant direct, often harsh contact with the elements just a few decades ago. Director Edmund Ballhaus authentically documents life in rhythm with the tides. The focus is on the traditional flat-bottomed boats, the Mutten and Tjalken, of the peat barge operators, which characterized the small harbors at that time. Eyewitnesses vividly recount how, in the autumn, when storm surges threatened, all dike breaches (the so-called "Diekgatts") as well as doors and windows had to be hastily boarded up with planks. Today, the Ems River has been largely straightened and tamed, the dikes have been raised, and a modern flood barrier protects the land. This film bridges the gap between the old, harsh world behind the dikes and the protective modern world. - - === - - - ⚠️ Note – VHS Archive This video is part of a digital VHS archive of historical documentaries and reports.
