From a simple slave, she turned into one of the most influential women of the Ottoman Sultanate. Her life was full of secrets, conspiracies, political and family intrigues. Kosem is a Greek Anastasia - the daughter of an Orthodox priest from the island of Tinos. She was given the name Mahpeyker, which means "moon-faced". Ahmed became sultan at the age of 13, he did not yet have concubines and children, which was dangerous for the dynasty. The country was ruled by viziers, and Ahmed had to provide the country with an heir. Kösem became the Sultan's main favorite and bore him many children. They had four sons: Mehmed, Murad, Ibrahim and Kasim. Two daughters: Ayşe and Fatma. Sultan Ahmed died very early at the age of 27, presumably from typhus. As a result of political intrigues, it was not his eldest son Osman who ascended to the throne, but his mentally ill younger brother Mustafa. Mustafa was Sultan for only three months. His mental illness worsened, and it was no longer possible to hide the problem. On February 26, 1618, he was deposed, although not killed. Ahmed's 14-year-old son Osman became Sultan. The Sultan was young and inexperienced. He started the Khotyn War and personally led the army. Before the start of this campaign, Osman ordered the execution of Shehzade Mehmed, Kösem's eldest son. The war was lost, which caused great discontent among the people. A janissary rebellion broke out in the country, Osman was overthrown and killed. The feeble-minded Mustafa received the sultanate throne for the second time. He often went completely mad, ran around the palace and called for the late Osman. A conflict between the janissaries and the sipahis was raging in the country, and the threat of civil war was in the air. The clergy and the Grand Vizier Kara Ali Pasha persuaded Mustafa's mother to agree to the deposition of her son. Thus, on September 10, 1623, the eleven-year-old son Kösem-sultan Murad found himself on the Ottoman throne. Since Murad became sultan at the age of only eleven, Kösem-sultan became regent for her young son. She ruled for nine years, until Murad took over the government in 1632, removing his mother from state affairs. Murad's reign lasted only 8 years, but he managed to leave his mark on history. During his reign, his two brothers, Kasim and Ibrahim, remained alive. Murad ordered both of them to be executed. Kasim was strangled, and Ibrahim was saved by Kosem Sultan, who persuaded the Grand Vizier not to kill the only legitimate heir. Sultan Murad died in the same way as his father - very young, at the age of 27. Since Murad left no sons, his last son, Kosem Sultan Ibrahim, ascended the throne. Ibrahim spent most of his life before ascending the throne as shehzade, practically in prison. He remembers the execution of his brothers Mehmed and Kasim, the two overthrows of Sultan Mustafa, and the overthrow and brutal murder of Sultan Osman. Under Ibrahim's reign, Kosem Sultan regained the power she had lost during Murad's reign. Sultan Ibrahim also tried to govern the country in addition to his mother, delved into state affairs and was interested in politics. Gradually, the relationship between mother and son worsened, and Ibrahim began to have mental problems. As a result, an uprising broke out, the padishah was overthrown by the janissaries, and a few days later he was killed. Ibrahim's young son Mehmed became the new ruler. Considering that his mother was a 20-year-old inexperienced girl named Turhan, Kosem again became regent for the young ruler. But Turhan's daughter-in-law did not sit idly by. In three years, she was able to secure a lot of support at court and begin a serious political struggle with her mother-in-law. On September 3, 1651, 20 warriors loyal to Turhan burst into Kosem's chambers, Kosem hid in a closet, but she was quickly found and dragged out of the harem into the street. She fought back and tried to escape from the executioners' hands, but the fate of the already elderly woman was sealed. She was beaten, her fingers were broken, and then strangled with a curtain rope.
