Romania: Jocuri din Muntenia / Dances of Muntenia (Ethnic Dance Theatre)

This suite of dances from the region of Muntenia was presented as the finale to EDT's 2013 Spring Concert Series, Black Sea Treasures. Essential elements of several of the most important folk dances from the area around Bucharest are developed. The Sirba is danced in whirling circles with each dancer's hand braced on his or her neighbor's shoulder. The Hora showcases the women's refined elegance. Gold and silver threads woven through the fabric of the women's skirts, known as fota, characterize the richness of their costumes. Finally, the Briul, meaning 'belt', features lightning footwork and humorous folk poetry known as strigaturi.
