A new wind is blowing through "Tohoku's Hawaii," but... this year is also bringing about changes that haven't happened in 36 years. At Spa Resort Hawaiians in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, four hula girls who just joined the company on April 1st approached their first practice with slightly nervous expressions. After about 30 minutes, they gave a magnificent hula dance performance. We look forward to their debut. Incidentally, all four girls are from Gunma, Tokyo, Shizuoka, and Kagoshima prefectures—all outside of Fukushima Prefecture. This is the first time in 36 years, since 1990, that all the new hula girls are from outside the prefecture. Hino Juri, from Shizuoka Prefecture, had no prior connection to Fukushima, but she was inspired by the shows she saw with her family as a child and by the hula girls who encouraged the disaster-stricken areas. Hino said, "I was deeply moved when I saw videos of some of my seniors, who, despite being victims of the disaster themselves, were performing with such bright smiles that you couldn't tell it was their experience. I hope to perform dances that can captivate and uplift many people, just like my seniors, and bring warmth to many hearts." Let's make Fukushima and Iwaki even more vibrant! The new hula girls are scheduled to make their stage debut around the summer of 2026.
