How I Process Raw Alpaca Fleece (100g at a Time!) | Frugal & Beginner Friendly
Ever look at a whole raw fleece and think *"I can't do that"*? Same. That's why I process mine 100 grams at a time — and in this video I'm showing you exactly how I do it, start to finish, on a budget and from the comfort of my AC. 🙌 Whether you're brand new to processing raw fleece or just looking for a more manageable system, this is for you. *🐑 ALPACA vs. WOOL — WHAT'S DIFFERENT?* This video focuses on *alpaca fleece**, but here's what you need to know if you're working with **wool instead:* *✅ Alpaca (what I'm doing in this video):* No lanolin, so no need for hot water or heavy-duty scouring agents Warm water + a few drops of Dawn dish soap is all you need Temperature changes are less critical, but still avoid dramatic swings to prevent felting Rinses clean fairly easily Great beginner fiber for processing! *⚠️ Wool (important differences!):* Contains lanolin, which must be broken down to properly scour You'll need *hotter water* (typically 140–160°F / 60–71°C) to dissolve the lanolin Use a dedicated scouring agent like *Unicorn Power Scour* or *Kookaburra Scour* for best results — Dawn alone may not fully cut through lanolin *Temperature consistency is critical* — dramatic shifts from hot to cold WILL felt your wool. Keep rinse water the same temperature as your wash water Do NOT agitate excessively — especially at high temps Depending on the breed, you may need multiple wash cycles --- *🧺 WHAT I USE IN THIS VIDEO (links below!):* Collapsible silicone wash tub/ Drain sieve /→ https://amzn.to/4gb4T7a Food scale → https://amzn.to/3SCgT82 Salad spinner → https://amzn.to/4xWLayz Sweater drying rack → https://amzn.to/4xWLayz Blending board →https://amzn.to/4eTZKxW Hand cards → https://amzn.to/4fcdhCn a great way to find hand cards is also eBay. look for ones in good shape.
