Part 5 of 6, a special home recording project on the Music and Song of Oriel. Funded by @artscouncilireland Learned from the singing of Mary Ann Carolan, who was a renowned performer of ballads and songs in the style and tradition of Co. Louth, this song and video pays tribute to her and to all our tradition bearers who give us such a rich legacy of music and song to pass on. When I think of this, I want to thank my own friend and musical mentor Cathal McConnell who is an inspiration to me. I have included one photo (thank you to Pete Heywood for that one) of Cathal at the end, all other photographs are from the wonderful Joe Dowdall collection at the Irish Traditional Music Archive, which documents Féile na Bóinne, Drogheda, 1977. Mary Ann Carolan is featured in some of these photos, as well as her brother Pap Usher and a host of other inspirational musical heroes.
