Thousands of followers believed that a new age of salvation was about to begin. Many sold their property, abandoned their businesses and prepared for a historic religious transformation. This historical analysis examines Zevi’s personality, his Kabbalistic beliefs, his messianic claims, his conflict with Jewish religious authorities, his possible psychological struggles, his arrest by the Ottoman Empire and the shocking decision he made in 1666, when he converted to Islam and became known as Aziz Mehmed Effendi.
