Beautiful Artworks in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg

You are welcome to join me for another fascinating online talk, this time exploring the history and artworks of the renowned State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Founded by Catherine the Great in 1764 as an exclusive royal retreat (hermitage), she proceeded to buy a huge collection of art from European aristocrats, which was then embellished by each of her successors, and then massively enriched by Bolshevik confiscations and Red Army seizures in conquered Germany in the 20th Century. The Hermitage collection is incredibly varied and we'll be looking at objects ranging from ancient tribal artefacts, through Renaissance and Baroque giants, up to post-impressionist masterpieces by Matisse and Picasso, while also taking in the lavishly decorated state rooms, testament to the incredible wealth and extravagant tastes of the Romanov Tsars.
