Flevopolder - The Biggest Artificial Island - #OddWorld #Flevopolder

It's by far the biggest man made island in the world: The Flevopolder in the Netherlands. You may have heard of how the Dutch have basically "built" their own country; the Flevopolder is only one piece of evidence of that. Some things were simplified in this video to keep it nice and succinct. The closing of the Zuiderzee brought along with it many protests, especially form fishing villages along the coast of the inland sea. However, to this day, you'll be able to find traces of this history in those villages - it's being kept alive. Another thing I chose not to dive too deep into was the building of the Amsteldiepdam, which came even before the Wieringermeerpolder. It just wasn't such a good story to open with, really. That's why I relegated it to a mention on the maps, instead. There were many - many - maps made for the Markerwaard. Eventually the economic benefits didn't outweigh the costs of building. However, a dam between Lelystad and Enkhuizen was constructed, effectively cutting the IJsselmeer in two, making one half the Markermeer. That lake has seen some more development recently, with the construction of the Marker Wadden. And finally: Sorry for the somewhat wonky audio quality, I had the mic a bit too close to my big mouth.
