Rib Anatomy | True Ribs, False Ribs, Floating Ribs | Typical vs Atypical Ribs
Anatomy of the ribs: The ribs, along with the thoracic vertebrae, sternum, and costal cartilages, make up the thoracic cage, also known as the bony thorax or rib cage. The rib cage protects organs and assists with breathing. The average skeleton has 24 individual ribs, formed in 12 pairs. There are three types of rib pairs: true ribs (1-7), false ribs (8-12), and floating ribs (11 and 12). Anatomists also classify individual rib bones into two types: typical ribs (3-9) and atypical ribs (1,2,10,11,12). The space between the ribs is called the intercostal space. There are 11 intercostal spaces, which serve as important landmarks for nurses and other healthcare professionals, especially when assessing heart and lung sounds.
