NDR Bigband feat. Danilo Pérez - September in Rio | Lumen | NDR Bigband

‘September in Rio’, a track from Danilo Pérez’s album ‘Panamonk’, draws on the musical roots of samba with its fast-paced, melodious and melancholic style. A truly transcultural experience! Recorded on 22 November 2025 at Kampnagel with the NDR Bigband and the Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez, conducted by JC Sanford as part of the “Lumen” programme. It is also becoming increasingly apparent just how significant Latin music was for jazz – an influence that was audible in the USA from the mid-1940s at the latest, but which for a long time did not receive the recognition it deserved. Danilo Pérez’s big band programme “Lumen” really shines a spotlight on this. Born in 1965, the Panamanian pianist and composer has long been blending more than just jazz and Latin music. His music also features influences from West Africa, the Middle East and classical music. “Lumen is a milestone in my career,” says Pérez. “It symbolises the power of music to bring cultures together and create shared experiences of beauty and harmony.” Something we could all do with in times when division seems to be on the rise rather than solidarity.
