DUTCH SUPERMARKET visit – GROCERIES in the NETHERLANDS [Ep. 72]
One of our favourite things about visiting a new country is seeing what their supermarkets are like. I know this probably isn’t the first thing you think of when travelling. But you feel like you know a country once you start enjoying various parts of its cuisine. And once you know the cuisine, you can start to look for it in the supermarket. A Dutch supermarket isn’t that different from a supermarket in NZ. But they have some Dutch specialities which we always look forward to. Stroopwafels are syrup waffles that you usually have with a coffee or tea. You put them over the steaming cup to melt the syrup first, before eating them. Another thing we enjoy (but not too often!) is the chocolate muesli, It’s obviously not very healthy, so I generally only have it on occasion. Dutch are famous for their cheese. And since Gouda is only about 10min away from where we’re staying, there’s an abundance of Gouda cheese. It’s basically the normal cheese here, and very cheap. They also have a lot of cinnamon related delicacies, especially their speculaas which are biscuits, usually in the shape of a windmill. I have to admit, the Dutch diet doesn’t look to be the healthiest. A lot of their products are pre-packaged and processed. And they really like their sugar. It’s lucky that they do so much cycling here to burn it off! Aside from various sweet items, Holland doesn’t have a particular type of cuisine, they tend to adopt food from other countries in Europe and further afield. They got a lot of ideas from Indonesia when it used to be a colony. So it does mean you can find a wide variety of food and ingredients in their grocery stores.
