When Soviet Tanks Entered Manchuria: Japan’s Last Front in World War II
In August 1945, as World War II was reaching its final days, Soviet forces entered Japanese held Manchuria in one of the fastest and most forgotten offensives of the war. This archival footage shows the Soviet campaign against Imperial Japan’s Kwantung Army in Manchuria, the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo, and the collapse of Japan’s last major position on the Asian mainland. While many people remember Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Japan’s surrender, fewer remember the massive Soviet advance that began on August 9, 1945. Across mountains, rivers, railways, and open plains, the Red Army moved with speed and force, helping bring Japan’s empire in Northeast China to an end. For the people of Manchuria, Japanese rule was ending — but the future remained uncertain. Liberation, occupation, surrender, fear, and relief all arrived together. This is the forgotten final offensive of World War II. #WW2 #Manchuria #SovietHistory #WorldWar2 #RedArmy #Japan1945 #KwantungArmy #Manchukuo #MilitaryHistory #HistoryDocumentary #ForgottenHistory #ArchiveFootage #WorldWarII #ImperialJapan #TerraStories
