Native fish: Mouth Almighty (Glossamia aprion), Finniss River, NT, Australia
The Mouth Almighty (Glossamia aprion) is a small native freshwater fish that inhabits slow-moving waters in northern Australia and New Guinea. It is sometimes described as a mini barramundi, which it superficially resembles in form and behaviour. Barramundi occupy many of the same habitats as mouth almighty, and several barramundi can also be seen in this video. An ambush predator, the mouth almighty lurks in the shadows waiting to ambush crustaceans, fish and insects with it its enormous mouth. It is also very territorial. This video is an assortment of video clips focusing on mouth almighty, but other fish and turtles also make an appearance. It gives viewers an insight into one freshwater biotope found in northern Australia There is a mouth almighty in every clip – some are partially hidden, some are very small, in some the other fish are more prominent, but they are always there lurking somewhere in the background. To see the smaller fish, the video is best viewed on a television or computer monitor rather than a cellphone. The majority of video was shot using a Gopro HD1 and HD3, both of which are now more than 10 years old. The poor light and old cameras combine to make some of the footage a bit grainy, but I hope you still enjoy watching it. A little of this footage has already been featured in another of my videos on the Finniss River which shows the diversity of freshwater fish and other animals in this aquatic environment.
