Training the Mind: Letting Go of Suffering Through Wisdom
Ajahn Dtun – Training the Mind: Letting Go of Suffering Through Wisdom Ajahn Dtun (Thiracitto), a respected monk in the Thai Forest Tradition and a disciple of Ajahn Chah, offers profound yet practical guidance on the gradual path of cultivating goodness and purifying the mind. In this teaching, he emphasises the importance of developing wholesome habits through Dāna (generosity), such as regularly offering alms. By making giving a consistent practice, we begin to condition the mind toward goodness, gradually transforming material attachment into spiritual wealth. This repeated act of generosity becomes a foundation for inner reflection and mental clarity. Ajahn Dtun explains that through the practice of Sīla (virtue), we gain control over our actions and speech. Recognising the harm caused by unwholesome behaviour, we naturally incline toward keeping the Five Precepts, which protect the mind from remorse and support the development of inner peace. However, even with generosity and virtue, the mind may still be disturbed by greed, aversion, and delusion. To overcome these deeper mental defilements, he encourages the cultivation of Samādhi (concentration) through consistent meditation practice. As the mind becomes calm and stable, wisdom begins to arise. With growing wisdom, we begin to see clearly that the mind and its mental states are separate, and that all experiences are impermanent and not-self. Through this insight, attachment gradually weakens, allowing the heart to let go of suffering. Ajahn Dtun also guides practitioners to reflect on the true nature of the body—composed simply of elements—helping to reduce identification and attachment, especially in the face of aging, illness, and death. This teaching presents a complete path of practice—from generosity to virtue, from concentration to wisdom—showing how consistent effort, mindfulness, and reflection lead the mind toward lasting peace and true happiness. 🔔 Subscribe for more Dhamma teachings: The Still Path 🍃 Key Themes in This Talk Cultivating goodness through Dāna (generosity) Developing discipline through Sīla (virtue) Calming the mind through meditation (Samādhi) Understanding impermanence and non-self Letting go of greed, aversion, and delusion Reflecting on the true nature of the body Walking the gradual path toward inner peace and liberation #AjahnDtun #ThaiForestTradition #TheravadaBuddhism #DhammaTalk #BuddhistWisdom #Dana #Sila #Samadhi #MeditationPractice #Mindfulness #InnerPeace #LettingGo #InsightMeditation
