Hello and welcome to "AufWanderschaft" (Wandering), High above the town of Mindelheim, the impressive Mindelburg Castle stands majestically. The castle's origins date back to around 1200. A fortified structure was built on the Georgenberg hill at that time to monitor the important trade route through the Mindel Valley. The first documented mention of Mindelburg Castle was in 1363. In 1365, it came into the possession of Duke Frederick of Teck. Under his rule, the complex was expanded and fortified. However, the ownership situation led to conflicts, and as early as 1368, the castle became the focal point of a bitter dispute between the Duke and the Bishop of Augsburg. In 1467, a new and significant chapter in its history began: Mindelburg Castle was acquired by the Knights of Frundsberg. The castle became particularly famous through Georg von Frundsberg, who was born here in 1473. He is considered one of the most famous generals of the Holy Roman Empire and became known as the "Father of the Landsknechts." Under his family, the castle was extensively expanded between 1480 and 1520, acquiring many of the structural elements that are still preserved today. After the death of Georg von Frundsberg in 1528, the castle remained in the family's possession for several more decades. When the Frundsberg line died out in 1586, protracted inheritance disputes began. Finally, Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria occupied the Lordship of Mindelheim in 1616. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle suffered severe damage. In 1646, it was destroyed by Swedish troops. Although the structure survived, its military significance was irretrievably lost. Since 1927, Mindelburg Castle has been owned by the city of Mindelheim. Today, Mindelburg Castle is considered the landmark of Mindelheim and one of the most important historical buildings in the Unterallgäu region. Visitors can explore the impressive complex and walk in the footsteps of knights, dukes, and the famous mercenary leader Georg von Frundsberg.
