Madala Kunene - Ubombo (Smith & Mighty Remix)
MUSIC WITH NO NAME Vol. 1 - was a wildly eclectic remix collection of quality new sounds created in 1996 from M.E.L.T.2000's rich global catalogue with massive musical landscapes. Durban guitarist Madala Kunene (commonly referred to as the king of the Zulu guitar) remix by Bristol based Smith & Mighty became a smash hit in the new South Africa when first played out in the clubs of Johannesburg by YFM radio DJ Rudeboy Paul. Madala's brand of blues operates in an opaque space where cool jazz, maskandi, mbaqanga, and a myriad of East Coast blues intersect. Celebrated by the youth in his country his music is remixed and interpreted by many of the electronic dance acts especially Black Motion who dedicated a tribute song and later recorded Ugayo with him and friend Mabi Gebriel Thobejane on their album Ya Badimo. Madala remains one of the true legends of the South African music scene. The original track Ubombo was first released in 1995 by MELT 2000 on the album Freedom Countdown featuring three other Durban based artists. Madala Kunene's band features Bernard Mndaweni on bass and Mabi Gabriel Thobejane on percussion. Recorded by Peter Thwaites and produced by Sipho Gumede late 1994. Executive Producer Robert Trunz
