On a chilly morning in Mansehra, 10-year-old Latif, who lived in a small shack, slipped out of the thin blanket his mother had covered him with and stepped outside. He gazed up at the sky, as he did every morning. “We had a home there, beyond the border,” his mother would say. Latif had never seen that home. His Afghanistan was a story. He was born in Pakistan, but he was a stranger here too. Life in the camp was difficult. Water was scarce, school was far away. But worst of all, they had to live with the shadow of a voice constantly urging them to “come back.” One day, an announcement came over the loudspeaker in the camp: “All unregistered families will be relocated within a week.” Latif held his mother’s hands. “Mom, where do we belong?” The woman fell silent. Then she whispered simply: “We don’t belong here, nor there… But wherever you bring goodness, that’s your homeland.” I hope you enjoy the video. Hijras are everywhere.
