Anzucht 2023 Teil 6 - Anzuchterde & Tomaten Pikieren

After three weeks, it's time to prick out the first tomato seedlings and plant them in individual pots. I always wait a little longer until at least the first true pair of leaves has developed. This way, you can also see which plants are the most well-developed. I only need one or two of each variety, so naturally I choose the strongest ones. Due to the overcast weather, some plants have grown quite tall. This isn't a problem, though, as long as the stem is still sturdy. The tomatoes are also planted deeper. You can plant them right down to the cotyledons. Additional roots will then develop on the stem. The plants are then watered thoroughly so that the soil settles well around the roots. After that, I try to keep the plants as dry as possible and only water them when the leaves start to wilt slightly. This promotes root growth and helps the plants get used to dry conditions. Later on, our tomatoes don't get any more water and have to make do with what's in the soil or what rain brings. Unfortunately, not everything went perfectly during the initial growing phase. I tried a new, peat-free potting mix for some of my chili plants. Unfortunately, they barely grew in it. The material is simply too coarse, with lots of wood chips. The direct comparison to the plants in my standard potting mix speaks volumes. If you're also having trouble with your seedlings, take a look at the root development of the young plants. If there are few roots, then growth won't progress. Also, don't overwater. If you're too heavy-handed, the roots can rot from the excess water. Furthermore, moist soil encourages the development of fungus gnat larvae. Feel free to share your experiences with this year's seedlings in the comments. Perhaps someone knows of a peat-free product that's well-suited for starting seeds? Our online shop. ...``` https://www.tomatenfluesterer.at/ Men's T-Shirt: https://www.tomatenfluesterer.at/prod...
